As you will have noticed by now, our servers keep Palringo for iPhone connected for a short period of time so quitting Palringo doesn't disconnect you.

We started with 5 minutes, but will be increasing this amount of time every so often.

Come back here to see how long we're keeping you connected.

From the 24th November 2008 : 2 hours 30 minutes + 5 minutes a day thereafter.

As of the 16th December 2008 : 4 hours 22 minutes

(Our server increases the time automatically by 5 minutes every day).

(for historical reasons)
From the 27th October 2008 : 90 minutes
From the 29th September 2008 : One Hour
From the 17th September 2008 : 15 Minutes
From the 12th September 2008 : 10 Minutes
From the 8th September 2008 : 5 Minutes

We'll keep increasing it, we're just in the middle of testing how much load it adds onto our servers.

Can this be an option in the Settings of the Palringo app.

Persistence - drop down list of options (None,5min)

Then you add to the list extra times as you feel the servers can cope in future upgrades.

This will achieve two things, give the user control on how much time they want to stay logged in, if at all, after closing the app, and let them know what that time is.

i'm curious what happens when you have messages waiting for you during the 5 minute persistent connection but then you don't open palringo again at all? do those messages just disappear?

Hi, we have decided to change this amount of time server-side for now, so we can keep on increasing that amount without having to release an update to Palringo every time we do so.

However, in the future, you'll be able to change this amount of time in the Palringo settings.

I'd like to hear about this too. It's not an easy usability problem to solve. For example, what if I'm in Palringo, swap out of the app, and without checking back log into my desktop IM client. People might think I'm ignoring them if there were messages waiting server-side.

This is similar to the case where I'm actively logged into Palringo, messages come in, and without checking I log into my desktop IM client. However, in that case I've technically gotten the messages so it's my responsibility.

One solution that would work well for me: if there are messages pending server-side when my session times out, send me an email.

or SMS text.

also..in the settings yous should make an option to set it so when you do close the app but stay signed in you automatically go away and you can set that away message as "brb" or "not in the app right now" "on the phone" whatever you think you do the most.
that would prevent people your talking with to think your ignoring them.

At the moment, you will lose your messages on other services but not Palringo - these messages will still pop up when you re-start Palringo.

We're working on a couple of solutions however, ultimately the server will save messages from other services, but in the mean time we're looking into sending you an email with your messages as soon as the server disconnects you - so you don't lose any of them (might not work exactly that as we're still toying with that idea).

The idea with changing the status to a default status when you go away is a great idea and might actually make it into 1.2.1 Wink

I noticed you have releases of Palringo for different operating systems (Windows, Mac, etc) - the server-side IM connection would be a good way to endorse your desktop editions.

Additionally, I wouldn't mind paying a small subscription to have extended times, e.g. 24h.
This will be especially useful once Push notification is released for the iPhone.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but wouldn't "Push" implementation eliminate the need to stay connected? Undecided

I wish Apple would've at least mentioned the status on "Push" function...I mean, they did say September, and it's already the 16th!

Actually you *must* stay connected for Push notifications to work. Our server will keep you online even if you're not in Palringo and when you receive a message over your IM services, our server will send a message to Apple's server, which will then forward a 'Push' notification to your phone.

That's the theory anyway Wink ... until Apple releases Push!

You won't get them in Yahoo, but you will receive them the next time you log into Palringo.
